Advantages of stainless steel chain slings from Ketten Wälder GmbH

Ketten Wälder GmbH's chain slings stand for quality and reliability, based on decades of experience in the lifting and industrial sector. As an established company, Ketten Wälder GmbH has continuously expanded its expertise to develop innovative and safe lifting equipment. This expertise is reflected in every product and offers customers worldwide optimum solutions for their lifting and transport tasks. Two of the most important quality features that speak in favour of cromox® chain slings from Ketten Wälder GmbH are the surface finish and the corrosion resistance of the material.

Chain slings "Made in Germany" impress with their outstanding surface quality

Developed, manufactured, and tested in Germany, our chain slings are known for their first-class quality and durability. They are characterised by their outstanding surface finish, which makes them robust and resistant to the most demanding conditions. The surface finish is often an underestimated aspect when it comes to slings. However, it plays an important role in overall performance and safety, especially when lifting and moving heavy loads.

The surface treatment protects the chain slings against corrosion and wear. Ketten Wälder GmbH utilises – in addition to the choice of material – the option of appropriate surface treatment to ensure that the chains last even under the toughest conditions. The high quality of cromox® chain slings is the result of decades of experience and innovation in the manufacture of industrial chains.

Stainless steel protects against corrosion

What makes cromox® stainless steel chain slings so resistant to corrosion? The answer lies in the chemical composition of the material. Stainless steel is an iron alloy that contains at least 10.5% chromium. The chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a thin, stable layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the steel. This layer is invisible and adheres very strongly to the steel surface. It protects the steel underneath from further contact with oxygen and other corrosive substances such as salts or acids. This layer is "self-healing". This means that if the surface of the steel is scratched or otherwise damaged, the chromium oxide layer can repair itself if enough oxygen is present. This allows the stainless steel to retain its corrosion resistance even after mechanical damage. There are different types of stainless steel, which differ in their chemical composition. Some types contain additional alloying elements such as nickel, molybdenum, or nitrogen, which can further improve corrosion resistance. For example, molybdenum increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while nickel improves resistance to acidic and alcoholic solutions. However, it is important to note that stainless steel is not completely immune to corrosion - under certain conditions, even stainless steel can corrode. It is therefore important to choose the right type of stainless steel for the specific application and environment and to follow our care and maintenance instructions.

cromox® stainless steel chain slings in welded version

cromox® stainless steel chain slings in welded version with up to 4-leg chain suspensions are made of stainless steel and have a load capacity of up to 23.10 tonnes, depending on the angle of inclination and chain thickness.

FAQs

What are chain slings?

Chain slings are special chains that are used for safely lifting, moving, and anchoring heavy loads in various industries. They are made of high-strength steel and are known for their high load-bearing capacity, flexibility, and durability. Chain slings can be attached to the load using load hooks, shackles or other connecting elements and are available in different lengths and strengths to fulfil different lifting requirements.

What standards are there for chain slings?

There are several standards for chain slings. The most important are

  1. DIN EN 818-2: This standard specifies requirements for chain slings with a uniform diameter. It describes the technical characteristics of the chains and specifies requirements for labelling and testing.
  2. DIN EN 818-4: This standard specifies the safety requirements and test methods for chain slings.
  3. DIN EN 818-6: This standard specifies information on use and maintenance.
  4. DIN EN 1677: This series of standards describes the requirements for components of slings and their connecting elements.

It is important to observe the relevant standards to ensure the safety and performance of chain slings.

What hooks are available for chain slings?

There are different types of hooks for chain slings and slings, including safety load hooks, swivel hooks, clevis hooks, eye hooks and other variants. The specific hook that should be used depends on the area of application.

What are the advantages of stainless-steel chain slings?

Chain slings made of stainless steel offer several advantages. Firstly, they are resistant to corrosion, which makes them ideal for use in demanding environments such as the maritime industry or the food sector. Secondly, they are very hardwearing and resistant to wear, which extends their service life. Thirdly, they offer a high load capacity, making them a safe and reliable choice for lifting heavy loads. Finally, they are easy to maintain and require less care and maintenance than other types of chain slings.
