cromox® stainless steel anchor chains -
Quality at the highest level

cromox® stainless steel anchor chains - quality for maritime demands

Like all cromox® products, cromox® stainless steel anchor chains are characterized by their unconditional reliability under the most adverse conditions in their field of application. Depending on the model, a cromox® anchor chain is corrosion-resistant to seawater and correspondingly durable. It is characterized by high strength values and excellent pitting resistance. The anchor chains are manufactured from selected stainless materials such as AISI 316L, AISI 318LN (duplex) and AISI F255 (superduplex). The high quality of a cromox® anchor chain is appreciated worldwide in the nautical sector.

The quality of cromox® stainless steel anchor chains makes them a leading international product in the maritime sector. Their high corrosion resistance is continuously confirmed by both experienced sailors and accredited test laboratories. A duplex or super duplex anchor chain is ideal for use in both fresh and saltwater and at water temperatures above 30°C (86°F). In the shop you will find a wide range of anchor chains in many different sizes and for different needs. Please refer to the individual anchor chain descriptions for details.

Why cromox® stainless steel anchor chains?

A cromox® stainless steel anchor chain is not only a symbol of quality and longevity, but also of environmentally conscious action. A conventional galvanized anchor chain releases considerable amounts of toxic zinc into the seawater through corrosion processes. This endangers aquatic life. In contrast, a cromox® stainless steel anchor chain makes an active contribution to the protection of the marine ecosystem. Its exceptional durability combined with a philosophy of environmental friendliness makes this anchor chain the first choice for environmentally conscious mariners.

cromox® stainless steel chains are unsurpassed in quality, durability, environmental protection and sustainability. With alloying elements such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum, as well as sophisticated surface treatments, these chains offer smooth and efficient operation. Galvanized chains are often rough and cause jamming when anchored. Precision manufacturing and uniform dimensions of cromox® chain links ensure smooth and safe handling of the chains. Upon request, you can receive a surface improved, electropolished anchor chain. It is even possible to engrave the individual chain links, e.g. with the name of the ship. With a cromox® anchor chain you do not make any compromises.

Materials and standards for cromox® stainless steel anchor chains

Stainless steel 1.4404 - AISI 316L is a material characterized by high corrosion resistance, especially to chlorides. It is ideal for use in the chemical, marine and food industries. Duplex stainless steel 1.4462 - AISI 318L offers even greater resistance to warm and salty water. Super duplex stainless steel 1.4507 - AISI F255 is another material known for its robustness and resistance to high temperatures and corrosion. This stainless steel is also used in the manufacture of cromox® anchor chains.

DIN 766, ISO 4565 and AS 2321 are important standards that guarantee the quality and safety of anchor chains. DIN 766 and ISO 4565 are European standards that define the requirements for dimensions and tolerances of anchor chains. AS 2321 defines the Australian specifications for anchor chains. The USA standard defines the American requirements for anchor chains. Depending on the application and geographical region, the appropriate standard should be followed.

Standards and certifications for cromox® anchor chains

Depending on the type, a cromox® stainless steel anchor chain complies with various international standards, including DIN 766, ISO 4565 and AS 2321. Compliance with these standards ensures that the anchor chain meets the highest quality and global safety standards. ISO 4565, AS2321 and DIN 766 apply to tested round steel chains of various grades in a gauge containing design. They define the dimensions, mechanical properties and handling of such chains. These standards define, among other things, the requirements for calibrated short link chains for anchor applications. These are made from welded short links of round steel.

The relevant standards in the USA cover similar requirements, but most importantly use different units of measurement for an anchor chain. We have taken this into account in the specifications of the corresponding products. The certifications and tests to which cromox® chains are subjected are carried out in our own test laboratory. This laboratory is certified by Lloyd's Register and thus guarantees absolute reliability. These certificates ensure that the chains and other cromox® products meet the highest quality and safety standards. The corresponding certificates are supplied with the purchase of cromox® products.

Materials for cromox® anchor chains

cromox® anchor chains are manufactured from various high quality stainless steels. The highly corrosion resistant stainless steel AISI 316L has the material number X2CrNiMo17-12-2 according to DIN. This stainless steel contains 2% molybdenum and has a low carbon content for better machinability. It is mainly used in freshwater applications. The duplex stainless steel AISI 318LN with the material designation X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 offers greater resistance to seawater, acidic and chloride-containing media and has been proven to have high strength. Particularly noteworthy is its yield strength, which is up to 150% higher than that of a comparable austenitic stainless steel. Such chains are standard for use in the offshore industry.

Super duplex stainless steel AISI F255 has the material designation X2CrNiMoCuN25-6-3 and has a mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite. An anchor chain made from this material has low thermal expansion and can withstand both high and low temperatures. AISI F255 is a chromium-nickel stainless steel manufactured with a copper additive. It offers a combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride-containing and other aggressive environments.
